Jacob, the CRLS Class of 2018 recipient of the “100 by 100” Cambridge Business Community
STEAM Award for Technology, now enrolled at the University of California Santa Cruz, told us:

“Computer science appeals to me because it is rigorously logical: to program you have to think
ahead, anticipating how instructions will interact, thus one can optimize a program’s efficiency.
One of the reasons I want to become an electrical and computer engineer is because I love
solving problems. I hope by studying the interactions between hardware and software I will have
the training and background to help develop more power-efficient operating systems for phones
and laptops, so that they use less electricity and are more sustainable.”

Congratulations, Jacob!

Yigermal, the CRLS Class of 2018 recipient of the “100 by 100” Cambridge Business Community
STEAM Award for Engineering, now enrolled at UMass Dartmouth, told us:

“As a kid when I was growing up in Ethiopia, I become very interested in engineering. When I was
small, I watched an engineering crew build roads in my isolated village. Because of the new
roads, the village transformed into a thriving community as new stores and businesses opened
up. That experience inspired me to learn about engineering so that I can change the lives of
others. In my junior year at CRLS, I started to take engineering, which gave me an idea of what I
want to study as a major. In the end, I became more interested in electrical engineering than
anything else. My two years in Engineering at CRLS increased my desire to learn more and study
an engineering discipline in college.”

Congratulations, Yigermal!

Smarika, CRLS Class of 2018 recipient of the Rose & Victor Rifkin Family Scholarship, now
enrolled at the College of the Holy Cross, told us:

“I have been drawn to history since fourth grade. I was a voracious reader and consumed every
piece of literature about the ancient world that I managed to get my hands on. I had always been
encouraged to pursue higher learning, but I knew even then that I would not be satisfied unless I
had a career in the field of history. I could not imagine not being in school, reading, analyzing,
and discussing different narratives, so I decided to dedicate my learning toward becoming a
history professor. Teaching history would not only allow me to explore my passion, but it would
also fulfill my dream of helping others. The opportunities I have been given in life have made it
possible for me to discover what fascinates me and, having been born and raised for my first five
years in Nepal, I hope to one day teach abroad and give the same opportunity to another
deserving child.”

Congratulations, Smarika!

Jessica, CRLS Class of 2018 recipient of the Friends of CRLS First Scholars Award Sponsored
by Cambridge Trust, now enrolled at UMass Lowell, told us:

“From my college education in the near future, I hope to create a project or movement that will
promote awareness and benefit those in need within our society. I want to use my developing
graphic design skills to create statistics and images and post them on a social media platform. I
also want to use my skills to advocate for justice and fight against issues in our society so that
youth may grow in a positive and safe environment. What matters to me the most is living
positively, and I know that there will be hardships in college, but my persistence in doing my
best will get me through it.”

Congratulations, Jessica!

Shaina, CRLS Class of 2018 recipient of the Friends of CRLS First Scholars Award, now enrolled at Salem State University, told us:

“One of my personal goals is to become a Neonatal Nurse because I have a strong love for babies. I also want to help ease families’ responsibility while taking care of newborns. My other goal is to go back to my country, Haiti, to build a hospital, because in Haiti, not a lot of mothers have the access to give birth at a hospital. This scholarship will help me achieve my passion’s goal, because I will be able to stay focused on my career instead of thinking about how I will repay loans.”

Congratulations, Shaina!

Max, an alto saxophonist and CRLS Class of 2018 recipient of the “100 by 100” Cambridge
Business Community Scholarship for the Arts, who is enrolled at the Berklee College of Music,
told us:

“While at Berklee I will take advantage of everything available to me, including auditioning for global touring groups such as the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in order to study with the many knowledgeable and experienced teachers through that program. During my time at Berklee I will relentlessly pursue my craft, so that I am desired as a performer and bandleader by the time I have graduated. This includes strengthening my skills doubling (playing other in-demand instruments), composing, arranging, and producing so that I am not limited in job prospects.”

Congratulations, Max!

Marie, CRLS Class of 2018 recipient of the Patrick Ewing Scholarship, who is enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, told us:

“My goals and plans for the next four plus years are to go to college to major in pre-med and also to become a physical therapist. As new doors open to a new world of challenges, I plan to thrive and push myself to reach my goal. I want to be able to help people recover and encourage people not to give up, even when they think that the state they’re in is permanent or is a barrier preventing them from doing what they were able to do before.”

Congratulations, Marie!

Joshua, CRLS Class of 2018 recipient of the Mary Frances Monti Scholarship, who is enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, told us:

“I really see the genuine worth in maintaining literature in our modern society. I want to pursue literature in any medium that allows me to share it with the world and those around me. The infinite open-endedness of literature allows for a deeper sense of individualism while simultaneously pulling us closer together – and being able to show it and introduce it to others is a real and significant dream I will not give up on.”

Congratulations, Joshua!
